About Us

A small team of dedicated, knowledgable, and certified fear free dog trainers.

We don't just train obedience. We help you build a cooperative relationship with your dog that lasts a lifetime!

Sits and downs or fancy 'obedience' behaviors performed in a distraction-free training room can only take you and your dog so far.

At Free To Be Dog we focus on teaching you and your dog essential skills necessary for everyday life together.

Training rooted in fun, cooperation, and skill building over fear, punishment, or coercion leads to safe, sustainable, and lasting change.

Our Mission

Bring fear free dog training to Moore County's most dedicated dog owners.

Our Philosophy

Dogs and their owners deserve training services that are humane, science-based, safe, and effective. Gone are the days of unrealistic or guaranteed 'results'. Behavior is complex, dogs are not robots, and our expectations reflect this.

Our Promise

We will always be transparent with you about your dog's behavior, prognosis, and what the training journey will entail. We will provide the guidance, support, and tools necessary for you to succeed in training your dog.

Our Guarantee

We guarantee that we will never offer a guarantee. Not only is this unethical but it also goes against everything we know about canine ethology and behavior change science. Training is a lifelong process of learning, maintenance, and progression. There is no 'end result'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

Why is payment required in order to book a service?

Our trainers are in high demand. Payment is required in order to book a spot in their calendar. Our fees do not only cover the time spent face-to-face with your trainer but also account for our trainers' expertise, experience, time spent preparing for your lessons, travel to and from lessons, insurance, and more.

Q:

What is positive reinforcement dog training?

Positive reinforcement dog training is rooted in teaching dogs what to do instead of the old school methods of punishing them for making a mistake. We manage the enviornment to set dogs up to make good decisions while teaching and rewarding behaviors we like. Identifying the root cause of behaviors we do not like allows us to replace them with appropriate behaviors and avoid harsh methods of punishment that can cause problematic side effects like aggression.

Q:

What is your cancellation policy?

In an effort to protect our trainers' schedules, avoid increasing our fees, and to respect our clients' time and investment in their training program, we do not accommodate cancellations. If you must cancel or reschedule an already scheduled lesson, that lesson is forfeited. Emergencies may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the trainer.

Q:

The dog training industry is NOT regulated? How can that be?

This is an unfortunate truth. Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer, no education, experience, or expertise required. This means anyone can recommend or implement training techniques that are not only ineffective at changing behavior but can cause more serious behavior problems than you started out with (severe fear and/or aggression).

Let's connect

Getting started is as easy as sending us a quick email via our contact form. Tell us a little bit about you, your dog, and your training goals and let's get you on the road to better behavior.

Don't wait for your dog to 'grow out of it' or for your life to 'calm down' because they won't and you will always be busy!
